This is a new segment I'm going to do on things to look out for in the future. I'm doing this as a kind of recommendation, also kind of speculation about what is going to be hot/good to jump in on board on. See, I read comics monthly like most fans rather than trade waiting (that is what we call it when you wait for a collected edition of several issues to come out usually months after the actual comics are done). This way I can recommend cool things and not have to always wait until last minute to find out the name of the trade to tell you to go buy that.. cause that's not always the best way to do it (covers change, things get pushed back last minute, ect). So onto the Comics to look out for:
Unstoppable Wasp by Jeremy Whitley and Elsa Charretier- Unstoppable Wasp is about Nadia Pym, daughter of Hank Pym and his first wife, Maria Trovaya. Nadia was raised in the Red Room, the same extreme Russian training facility that the Black Widows (yes there are a few) were trained. The difference is Nadia is a genius inventor, so they pretty much locked her up and kept her away from everyone. Nadia has finally escaped the Red Room though and started a new life in America as an Avenger and the new Unstoppable Wasp (Janet totally approves of Nadia being Wasp by the way). Upon coming to America, Nadia runs into super scientist, spy, and hero Mockingbird and discovers there is a list of the top geniuses of the world.... and they're all men. The first genius woman on the list is number 27. Nadia decides to gather up some of the most brilliant young women she can find, create Genius in Action Research Labs (G.I.R.L. for short) and make people notice the contributions of women on the list of geniuses. It's a fun title and fans of Ms. Marvel, Mighty Thor, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Birds of Prey, and Batgirl of Burnside will love this. Added bonuses, the colorist, Megan Wilson, is an engineer as her full time job and this inspired the Agents of G.I.R.L. section in each comic (which I hope make it to the trade), which similar to early Wonder Woman issues highlights successful women, though this feature focuses solely on successful women in S.T.E.M. fields.
Backstagers by James Tynion IV and Rian Sygh- Backstagers is literally everything I wish I had when I was younger. Basically Backstagers is a group of queer boys who deal with the craziness of putting on stage performances as the backstage crew. They do everything to make sure the actors just have to get on stage and perform. The thing is? The backstage is a magical world where all backstages are connected and almost anything is possible. Add the mystery of some previous backstagers disappearing, a mysterious and seemingly dangerous being, monsters, and actors that don't appreciate them.. The Backstagers have their work cut out for them. Both creators are queer as well and they've both stated this is the kind of series they wanted to see as kids. Every library should have this.. right next to their queer girl Lumberjanes. And no, there is nothing else like this out there that I've seen.
